Digital TV and Radio - The Changing Face of Radio and Television
Digital TV
A new format called ATSC digital TV is being implemented in North America and will replace the analog NTSC one in 2009. This will allow high-definition television (HDTV) to be implemented in terrestrial television broadcasting. This digital TV transition will enable households that do not currently have a satellite system to receive digital terrestrial TV will give you an improved picture quality.
Other new benefits of digital transmission is that more channels can be transmitted in the same bandwidth (portion of the radio frequency spectrum), which allows more broadcast channels using existing transmitters and antennas (although the changes will be necessary) and allow some of the bandwidth to be used for other services, if desired, such as voice and data or government uses.
For the average user, the image quality, whether the use of HDTV or not, will greatly improve.
In the UK, this transformation has been underway for some years with the result that many people have such a great variety of channels available through digital terrestrial television transmission as they would with a satellite system and the quality of both enhanced image.
For the consumer, should be understood that it is not necessary to buy a whole new TV to receive the new transmissions. A simple decoder (digital tuner) can be used, although more and more new TV will be able to pick up digital broadcasts without an additional box. These decoders retailed at very low prices for what is not a big investment, and the U.S. government is taking steps to help people with vouchers to ensure all improvements to this new service before the stop analog broadcasts. Additional equipment may only be a better antenna.
In the U.S. market most people already use satellite services and cable and most of them already receive digital signals, but up to 20% may be receiving analogue terrestrial services in these people a great improvement in services TV is on the horizon.
